Dell Rapids lies on the Big Sioux River in northern Minnehaha County, about 20 miles north of Sioux Falls. It was founded in 1871 as Dell City and named for rapids that reminded settlers of the Dells of the Wisconsin River. The railroad arrived from Egan in 1881, and the city incorporated in 1888.
A downtown built from stone
After a fire burned most of the wooden buildings on Main Street, Dell Rapids rebuilt them in pink Sioux quartzite, the hard local stone that still comes out of two large LG Everist quarries served by the D&I Railroad. The high school teams are the Quarriers, and the city celebrates Quarry Days every July and Cootie Days every June. The 2020 census counted 3,996 residents and 1,606 housing units.
Older homes and existing systems
Dell Rapids is one of the oldest towns in the area, and a home that already has a radon system still needs upkeep. South Dakota DANR says the fans last about 11 years on average and cost roughly $145 to $300 to replace. If your fan has gone quiet, the U-tube gauge on the pipe reads level, or a new test came back high, the system may need a repair or an upgrade.
