Harrisburg is a Lincoln County suburb about 2.7 miles from the southern edge of Sioux Falls. Its story starts with a stagecoach mail stop at the Johnson Harris homestead on Nine Mile Creek; Harris named the post office after himself. The first train came through on August 1, 1879, and after a few years as Salina and Springdale, the Harrisburg name came back in 1890.
One of the fastest-growing towns in the state
The census counted 4,089 people in 2010 and 6,732 in 2020, and the Census Bureau's 2024 estimate is 10,203. Most of that growth is brand-new housing. The Harrisburg School District now serves about 4,800 students, and three of its elementary schools (Adventure, Freedom and Liberty) sit inside city limits. Downtown, the restored 1899 State Bank building at 101 Railroad Avenue still carries a bullet hole that local legend blames on John Dillinger.
Testing a new Harrisburg home the right way
South Dakota DANR's testing advice: place the kit in the lowest lived-in level of the house, at least 20 inches off the floor, and keep windows and doors closed for 12 hours before and during a short test.
